Radon gas is a decay product of uranium found in ores and minerals located in the ground. As the uranium decays, a series of elements are formed, including radium which then decays to radon gas. Radon gas can then enter a building or home through cracks in a foundation, along plumbing and electrical conduits and even through the drinking water. Exposure to elevated levels of radon has been correlated to a greater increase in the incidence of lung cancer and possibly stomach cancer. In fact, some research organizations believe that radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking.
The biggest problem with radon gas is much of the population is unaware of the health risk from chronic exposure to this gas. Adding to this problem is the fact that radon gas is odorless, colorless and does not induce any short-term health affects. Thus, without testing beforehand, one wouldn't know they have been exposed to elevated levels of radon until the damage has already been done.
EEI can test a home, school or business for radon accurately and easily. All data gathered is explained clearly in a report. This report includes an introduction which provides the background, and scope of work for the project. The next portion of the report provides an executive summary of the data collected along with a more detailed description of the results. Conclusions and recommendations based upon the data are also provided. The report also contains a complete description on how the data was collected, including a summary of the sampling and analytical techniques utilized. The final section delineates the quality assurance and quality control measures implemented to ensure accurate data. Finally, the report will include an Appendix containing support documentation for the project.
